Sethebe Manake Is Revolutionizing Property Valuation in Africa with GoSmartValue

Founder Magazine (FM): Sethebe, thank you for joining us. To start, can you share what led you to leave a successful corporate career and start GoSmartValue?

Sethebe Manake: Thank you for having me. My pivot to entrepreneurship was driven by a powerful dream—I wanted to level the playing field in real estate. With over a decade in corporate roles managing portfolios and valuations, including as CEO of Letlole La Rona, I recognized that many people were making critical property decisions without access to accurate information. GoSmartValue was born from that need: to empower people with data and transparency

About the Startup

Q1: What is GoSmartValue, and what problem does it solve?
A: GoSmartValue is an online proptech platform offering automated property valuations, market insight reports, and advisory services. It simplifies the valuation process with instant, accurate data—reducing reliance on manual, time-consuming methods and closing the information gap in property transactions

Q2: Why is this problem especially pressing in Botswana’s real estate market?
A: In many parts of Africa, including Botswana, a shortage of reliable data means financiers and property owners struggle to assess value or access finance. GoSmartValue bridges that gap by providing data on sale trends, crime rates, incomes, land rates—helping both buyers and financiers make informed decisions

Q3: You’ve faced resistance bringing tech into a traditional industry. How did you persevere?
A: Resistance came mainly from entrenched mindsets in real estate. People were accustomed to manual valuations and skeptical of automation. We focused on demonstrating the value—accuracy, affordability, and speed—which helped change minds over time

Q4: You’re also breaking new ground as a female founder in proptech. What has that journey been like?
A: It’s been tough. As the first woman elected president of Botswana’s Real Estate Institute, I’ve faced language barriers and biased attitudes that questioned my technical knowledge. Yet, I persist with confidence: “Stick to your guns. Don’t lean back, don’t give space, take space.

Milestones & Impact

Q5: What are some milestones that have fueled your momentum?
A: In 2021, we raised about BWP 480,000 (~USD 37,500) from Angel Network Botswana, which helped us scale. We also won the “Most Innovative Real Estate Analytics Company” award, affirming the value of our AI-driven platform Plus, we’ve partnered with top banks in Botswana, like FNB, ABSA, and Stanbic, enabling automated valuations through vetted values.

Advice & Insights

Q7: What advice would you offer aspiring founders, especially in traditional sectors?
A: Go for it. Tech solves real problems—even in legacy industries. Focus on a specific, meaningful challenge, learn the tech you need (I did basic coding and app building myself), and build trust through impact

Q8: Any advice for female founders navigating male-dominated industries?
A: Stay persistent and unwavering. Trust in your capability—“don’t lean back, don’t give space, take space.” Your competence deserves recognition, and it can change narratives
