Huda Kattan:
“Thank you! I’ve always been passionate about beauty. Growing up, I loved how makeup could completely transform someone’s look and confidence. But it wasn’t until I moved to Dubai and started my beauty blog in 2010 that I realized there was a huge potential to turn my passion into a business. That’s where the journey really began.”
FM: “Launching Huda Beauty must have come with its challenges. Could you share one of the biggest obstacles you faced early on?”
Huda Kattan:
“Absolutely. In the beginning, one of the hardest parts was convincing retailers to take a chance on us. When I launched our first product—false lashes—I had invested $6,000 of my savings. It was nerve-wracking, not knowing if they would sell. Sephora eventually agreed to carry them, and it was a game-changer for us. But getting there took persistence and belief in the product.”
FM: “Your brand has become synonymous with innovation and inclusivity. What do you think makes Huda Beauty stand out in such a competitive industry?”
Huda Kattan:
“For me, it’s always been about staying authentic and connected to our customers. My background as a beauty blogger gave me insights into what people truly wanted and what the market was missing. We focus on delivering high-quality, innovative products while staying relatable. Inclusivity has also been key—we want everyone, no matter their skin tone or background, to feel represented and empowered.”
FM: “Inclusivity is a core part of your brand’s identity. How do you ensure that it stays central to your business?”
Huda Kattan:
“Inclusivity isn’t just a buzzword for us; it’s a guiding principle. It influences everything from the shades we develop to the stories we tell in our campaigns. As a woman of Iraqi heritage, I know how important representation is. We actively listen to our community and involve diverse voices in our decision-making process.”
FM: “Huda Beauty has grown into a global empire, with products loved by millions. What’s been your proudest moment as a founder?”
Huda Kattan:
“There have been so many, but one moment that stands out is when we became one of the top-performing brands in Sephora worldwide. Knowing that something I started with a simple idea grew to have such an impact is incredible. But honestly, the messages from customers saying how our products made them feel confident—that’s the real win.”
FM: “Running a global business can be overwhelming. How do you balance your professional responsibilities with your personal life?”
Huda Kattan:
“It’s definitely not easy, but I’ve learned to prioritize. My family is my anchor, and I make time for them no matter what. I’ve also built an amazing team that shares my vision, which allows me to focus on the bigger picture without getting caught up in every detail. Balance is a work in progress, but having a strong support system helps.”
FM: “In 2020, you expanded into skincare with Wishful. What inspired this move beyond makeup?”
Huda Kattan:
“It was a natural progression. I’ve always believed that great skin is the foundation of great makeup. As someone who has struggled with skin issues, I wanted to create products that simplify skincare while delivering real results. Wishful is all about transparency and self-care, which reflects my personal skincare journey.”
FM: “Finally, what advice would you give to young entrepreneurs, especially women, looking to break into male-dominated industries?”
Huda Kattan:
“My advice is to stay true to yourself and your vision. The road will have obstacles, but don’t let them discourage you. Surround yourself with people who uplift and challenge you. Most importantly, take risks and learn from every mistake. Success isn’t linear, but if you keep pushing forward, you’ll get there.”
